One week into the new year and we face a new crisis in Algeria, as if the lack of decent housing weren't already enough we are now faced with the rising price of food. Everyday basics which are quite often already a struggle for many families to afford are being pushed way out of people budgets.

So the "people" are protesting...you would think! What's actually happening is that people  (and by people I mean the youth of Algeria who clearly have nothing better to do!) are using it as an excuse for lawlessness and stealing. Stealing from their own communities and perhaps from people who, despite owning a business are also finding it hard to survive.

In my own community we have seen the destruction of a post office, a mall, a local school has been ransacked and burnt....though how badly I don't know...
Last night there were police with teargas in one of the local housing estates, and regular everday people..those who are affected by the economy but who are now too afraid to go out and protest are clearly beginning to feel agitated.

I live in an area that's full of wholesalers and they have been closed since Thursday...the longer the situation continues the harder it will be for people. Yes the price rise was unexpected and unreasonable, but this is worse....
There is talk of  flour shortage looming..I was unable to buy milk today...but here that's not so unusual. We'll see tomorrow whether people have been panic buying and whether or not there is anything left in our local shops.

Algeria can be as volitile and heated as it's people but it's also a place of great beauty and an overwhelming kindness and love... I really pray that it's the love and kindness that win out here insha'allah....

It's very sad to see people behaving like this towards one another, I just pray it will all be over soon and that no-one else gets hurt...

  1. Assalaamu Alaykum,

I hope you and your family are well.

This is so sad really. I can understand the demonstrating but not the looting!

May All bring peace to the city and keep all of our families safe.

  3. Essalam Alaikum, I am happy to see you and your family are doing ok. It's been pretty quiet here in the South, Alhamdulillah. There isn't a lack of jobs here though, there is a lack of wanting to work however. Strange how that works. Anyhow, we may be moving the North. :-D

  4. Esalaamu aleikoum,

Enchallah kheir for you sis. Personally, i have less ppl then you but i am having hard time when i go to shop. elhamdullah i paced myself with the Eid meat (no worries there) but other staples that usually cheap are high now. i am not seeing the 40% cuts.

I have stopped shopping in Kolea as i cannot afford to(i mean other then veg) i go outside to cheraga or blida to bulk shop for items at the superettes.

have you heard of Kheyar Kat? i have found some argains there machallah.

If we, foreigners are struggling, imagine how poorly paid Algerians are doing.

I understand about housing. my house tiny hole, has no papers thou we technically own it. cant build on it or rent it or sell it. we are *trying* to find something to rent, since we cannot as 5 ppl live in one room anymore.

as always Kate, you're n my prayers!

  5. I know how you feel Heni, I had to abandon my menu for this month first week in and didn't have the time or energy to modify it..so I've been flying by the seat of my pants since then...and of course I know you know what happens to a budget when you do that...some prices are coming down slowly..though as you rightly say not as much as we were promised..but then maybe thats because the vendors have stock to sell off that was bought by them at the higher price...wa allahu aalam.

I have no idea how regular Algerians manage.. I'm working up the courage to ask though..maybe in that, there is something for us to learn eh?

Jenifer.... you coming as far North as Algiers?? would be lovely to share an afternoon sometime :)

    xxx

  6. I shared this post on my wall on FB. Hope that's alright with you. I want to let people know about the situation that's hitting Algeria/the world right now. If only we were less driven to consuming and devouring all the resources here in the Western hemisphere, I think even a shortage of food of this kind wouldn't be so damaging. InshAllah things take a change for the better, ameen.
